An air conditioner covered in ice is a sure sign something is wrong. This Booneville homeowner called us because their system kept freezing up. The outdoor unit had iced over, and even after the homeowner thawed it out, the problem came right back. Our technician came out at the start of September to find out why.
What Our Technician Found
Rather than thaw the system out again and hope for the best, he worked through the parts that keep air and heat moving. He found several that needed attention:
- The indoor blower motor. This motor moves air across the indoor coil and through the house. When airflow drops, that coil can get cold enough to ice over. This motor needed to be replaced.
- The outdoor fan motor. This fan pulls air through the outdoor coil to carry away the heat taken out of your home. It also needed to be replaced.
- The contactor. This is the switch that turns the outdoor unit on and off. Its contacts were worn.
- The outdoor coil. It was due for a thorough deep cleaning.

What We Completed
- Replaced the indoor blower motor with a new ECM motor.
- Replaced the outdoor fan motor with a new ECM motor.
- Replaced the worn contactor.
- Opened up the outdoor unit and deep cleaned the coil.

For the deep clean, we lifted off the top of the outdoor unit and the fan assembly so we could reach the coil from the inside instead of just rinsing the outside surface.
The Result
All four repairs were completed in a single visit, and our technician checked the system with digital gauges while he was there. With new motors on both ends and a clean outdoor coil, the system has what it needs to move air and shed heat the way it was designed to. What Homeowners Can Learn From This Job
- Ice is a symptom, not the problem. Thawing a frozen system can get it running for a while, but if the cause is still there, the ice comes back.
- Turn it off and call. If you see ice on your system, switch the thermostat to off and give us a call. Running a frozen system can put extra strain on the compressor.
- Airflow matters. Keep filters changed and vents open, and keep plants and debris away from the outdoor unit.
