Van Buren AC Repair: Clearing a Clogged Condensate Drain and Replacing a Capacitor

When this Van Buren homeowner’s heat pump stopped cooling in late September, they called us to find out why. Sometimes a cooling problem comes down to one failed part. This time our technician found more than one issue, and he worked through each of them.

What Our Technician Found

This heat pump had been worked on before, so he looked over the whole system instead of assuming the cause.

First, the condensate drain was clogged. While your system cools, it pulls moisture out of the air, and that water has to drain away from the indoor unit. On this system, the end of the drain line was packed with sludge. A backup like that can leak water around the indoor unit or trip the system off.

Next, he tested the capacitor in the outdoor unit. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the boost they need to start. This one needed to be replaced.

He also found that the return plenum, the box where air flows back into the system, needed repair work.

  • Replaced the capacitor with a new one.
  • Repaired the return plenum, lining it with foil-faced duct board and sealing the seams.

The Result

The drain clearing and capacitor replacement were both completed on this visit, along with the return plenum repair work. Our team will be back for one more step: weatherizing the return plenum to finish that part of the job. If your system is having similar trouble, learn more about our AC repair service.

What Homeowners Can Learn From This Job

  • Condensate drains clog over time. Algae and sludge build up inside the line. Water near the indoor unit, or a system that keeps shutting off, can be early signs.
  • Capacitors are wear parts. They take a beating every time the system starts, so replacing one is a common late-season repair.
  • The return side matters too. Gaps in the return can pull in dusty, humid air from wherever the equipment sits, so a well-sealed return helps the whole system.
  • Maintenance is the time to catch both. Having the drain checked and the capacitor tested on a scheduled visit is much easier than dealing with either on a hot afternoon.
