Leaky Air Ducts and Loose Connections in a Fort Smith Attic (Duct Sealing and Bath Fan Vent)

Leaky ducts can make some rooms hot or cold no matter where the thermostat is set. In this Fort Smith home, the duct connections in the attic were loose and the registers were letting air escape.

What Our Technician Found

Our crew found takeoffs (the spots where duct runs branch off the main box) that were not attached securely to the plenum (the main box of the duct system). Old tape was failing, and the bathroom exhaust fan was not vented outside the home.

What We Completed

  • Reconnected loose takeoffs to the plenum.
  • Removed old tape and sealed the takeoffs and plenum with mastic and tape.
  • Sealed the floor and ceiling registers with mastic and tape, and caulked where the boots meet the floor and ceiling.
  • Installed a new bathroom fan and vented it outside.

The Result

Air now goes where it is supposed to go instead of leaking into the attic, and the bathroom fan sends moisture outside. Learn more about our AC repair.

What Homeowners Can Learn From This Job

  • Uneven rooms can be a duct problem. Leaks at the connections waste air you already paid to cool or heat.
  • Tape alone does not last. Mastic holds up much better in a hot attic.
  • A bath fan should vent outside. Venting into the attic can lead to moisture and mold.
