A Van Buren Comfort Club (our maintenance plan) member called because the system would not turn off.
What Our Technician Found
Our technician checked the outdoor unit’s electrical panel. The contactor (the switch that sends power to the outdoor unit when the thermostat calls for cooling) needed to be replaced. When the contact points in that switch stick together, the outdoor unit can keep running even after the thermostat tells it to stop. There was also rust and staining inside the panel.

What We Completed
- Checked why the system would not shut off.
- Replaced the contactor with a heavy duty two pole contactor.
- Cleaned and tightened the wire connections.
- Checked that the system turns on and off with the thermostat.
The Result
The outdoor unit has a new heavy duty contactor and turns on and off the way it should. Learn more about our AC repair.
What Homeowners Can Learn From This Job
- A system that will not shut off needs attention. Running nonstop wears parts and runs up the power bill.
- The contactor works hard. It snaps on and off every time your AC runs.
- Rust in the panel is worth a look. Moisture and electrical parts do not mix.
