At this Alma home, one ductless unit in the living room was the only source of heating and cooling. The bedrooms got little or none of that air, so they were hard to keep comfortable. Seth, Luis and Johan installed a Cooper & Hunter ductless system that gives each main room its own unit.
What We Installed
A ductless system needs no ductwork. Slim indoor units mount high on the wall and blow warm or cool air straight into the room, connected through a small opening in the wall to one outdoor unit. This Cooper & Hunter outdoor unit is a heat pump from the brand’s Hyper line, built for cold weather, and it can serve up to four rooms. Before picking units, we worked out how much heating and cooling each room needs (a room-by-room sizing check). That put a wall unit in each main bedroom and a slightly larger one in the living room. The smallest bedroom needed very little, and it sits next to rooms that now have units, so it didn’t get its own.

What We Completed
- Set the new Cooper & Hunter outdoor unit on a pad beside the house
- Mounted three indoor wall units, one in each main bedroom and one in the living room
- Ran copper lines and wiring from the outdoor unit to each indoor unit
- Covered the outside lines with white protective covers to keep them neat and out of the weather
- Installed drain lines to carry away the water each unit collects while cooling
- Added an outdoor power shutoff box for safe servicing
- Tested the lines for leaks, then ran every room in heating and cooling
The Result
Each main room now gets heating and cooling directly instead of waiting for air to drift in from the living room. Each room’s unit can be set on its own, so a bedroom can run cooler for sleeping. Learn more on our Van Buren AC installation page.
What Homeowners Can Learn From This Job
- One wall unit can only reach so far. Air from a single indoor unit does not travel well around corners into closed rooms.
- Size each room on its own. A unit matched to its room avoids struggling to keep up or switching on and off too often.
- Rinse the filters regularly. They lift out of the top of each indoor unit and rinse clean, which keeps air flowing freely.
