Outdoor AC Fan Quit After a Storm in Natural Dam, AR (New Capacitor and Contactor)

Storms in the River Valley do more than knock out the lights. In early September, after a tornado near Natural Dam and a 24 hour power outage, a homeowner told us the outdoor fan was no longer working even though the rest of the system seemed to try.

What Our Technician Found

Power surges and hard restarts after an outage often strain the electrical parts in the outdoor unit. Our technician found a run capacitor (the part that gives the motor its starting kick) that needed to be replaced and a contactor (the switch that turns the outdoor unit on and off) that needed work. Those two parts control how cleanly the outdoor unit starts and whether power reaches the compressor (the pump inside the outdoor unit) and the fan when the thermostat calls for cooling.

What We Completed

  • Checked the outdoor unit after the storm and outage.
  • Replaced the run capacitor.
  • Replaced the contactor in the outdoor unit.
  • Checked how the system was running with gauges (the meters that show system pressure) at the outdoor unit.

The Result

With new starting parts in place, the outdoor unit has a clean path to start again after the outage. Learn more about our AC repair service.

What Homeowners Can Learn From This Job

  • Outages are hard on contactors and capacitors. The surge when power comes back is rough on worn parts.
  • An outdoor fan that will not spin is a clue. Do not keep running a system that cannot get rid of heat.
  • We serve rural homes too. Natural Dam homes are part of our Van Buren service area.
