The job at a glance

  • Town: Fort Smith, AR
  • Service: AC repair
  • Technicians: Luis and Seth

What we found

Luis and Seth used an electronic leak detector to search this air conditioner for a leak of refrigerant (the fluid that carries heat out of your home). The search led to a new indoor coil, the part that cools the air before it goes into your ducts. The replacement coil was supplied as a warranty part.

Adding refrigerant to a leaking system only buys time. Here, the indoor coil was replaced after the leak search, and the system was pumped out and refilled so it starts clean and dry.

What we did

  • Searched for the leak with an electronic leak detector
  • Removed the refrigerant from the system before opening it up
  • Replaced the indoor coil with the warranty part
  • Installed a new filter drier (a small filter that catches moisture and debris) on the smaller copper line
  • Pumped the air and moisture out of the system before refilling it
  • Refilled the system with refrigerant
  • Sealed the seams where the coil cabinet meets the ductwork

The result

With a new coil, a new filter drier and a full load of refrigerant, the system is set up to hold its refrigerant. Sealing the cabinet seams keeps cooled air moving into the ducts instead of leaking out around the coil.
