AC Blowing Warm Air in Fort Smith, AR (New Capacitor and Hard Start Kit)

When the air from the vents turns warm, something in the outdoor unit usually needs attention. In late September, a Fort Smith homeowner called because their air conditioner had started blowing warm air.

What Our Technician Found

Our technician opened the electrical panel on the outdoor unit and tested the capacitor (the part that gives the motor its starting kick). This one is a dual run capacitor, so it helps two motors at once: the compressor (the pump inside the outdoor unit) and the outdoor fan motor. A weak capacitor is one of the most common reasons an outdoor unit struggles or stops cooling.

He also installed a hard start kit (a part that helps the compressor start). It gives the compressor a stronger start, so it does not sit and hum and strain every time it turns on.

The Result

With a new capacitor and a hard start kit in place, the outdoor unit has the electrical help it needs to start and run more reliably. Learn more about our AC repair service.

What Homeowners Can Learn From This Job

  • Warm air is a useful clue. It often points to a problem with the electrical parts in the outdoor unit or with the compressor starting.
  • A capacitor and a hard start kit work together. One helps the motors start and keep running. The other helps with the hardest moment, the start.
  • Do not ignore a humming outdoor unit. That sound often means the compressor is trying to start and cannot.
